Gary Neville admitted he couldn’t believe Chris Smalling was allowed to re-enter the pitch moments before Harry Maguire rescued a draw for Leicester against Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho‘s side appeared to have secured a comeback win after a Juan Mata double cancelled out Jamie Vardy’s first half opener.

The visitors missed a string of chances to seal the three points but appeared on course to register the win even after they went down to 10 men when Smalling appeared to have pulled up with a groin injury.

Rather than see out the game a man light, Mourinho opted to reintroduce Smalling after he had received treatment but the centre-half was powerless to prevent Maguire from powering home Marc Albrighton’s sensational cross.

Commentating on the game for Sky Sports, Neville said: ‘You can’t believe it, he cannot believe it. And I have to say, have I just seen what I have just seen?

‘It’s an unbelievable cross from Albrighton. But Chris Smalling has just come back onto the pitch into a central defensive position, I cannot believe he’s gone back on in there into a position to pick up the best header of the ball at the back post.

‘You see him limping there at the back post with Ashley Young, and it’s incredible. He had a chance in the first half Maguire, it’s an unbelievable finish to this match.

‘The quality is wonderful from Albrighton, the finish is fantastic.

‘You have to question whether De Gea should be out there, it’s three yards out from goal. But take nothing away from Leicester, a wonderful moment for those fans.”
