Tulloch and Fenton star as England’s gymnasts win gold

Englands gymnasts swept to more medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Sunday, despite double Olympic champion Max Whitlock suffering disappointment in his favoured events.

Courtney Tulloch and Nile Wilson, who won mens team gold alongside Whitlock last week, claimed gold and silver respectively on the rings, while 17-year-old Georgia-Mae Fenton won the womens uneven bars.

Whitlock, however, was beaten in the two events in which he excelled at the Rio 2016 Games.

The 25-year-old finished sixth in the floor exercise and then had to settle for silver on the pommel horse as Northern Irelands Rhys McClenaghan, 18, pipped his idol to the gold.

Tulloch, 22, said: “Were a young team – Max leading it, we all look up to him, hes an amazing gymnast – but weve all got good chemistry and its amazing to be a part of.”

“Very pleased to get silver, and to Courtney, hes a massive inspiration – to be stood next to him,” said Wilson, 22.

“Max is an amazing role model for me; hes one of the best, we all look up to him. Today he made a few mistakes but hell bounce back, Im sure.”

Whitlock said: “Ive had a brilliant experience in the team competition with those boys. And today is just one of those things in sport. It might what I needed to really push me.”

“The best part is that I beat my coach,” said Miller, 24, from Carlisle. “We joked for years that Id throw over his best [80.14m] and when 80.26m came up it was one up on him.”

Elsewhere on the first day of track and field, Asha Philip reached the womens 100m final by winning her semi-final, while Adam Gemili progressed to the mens final in second place behind Jamaican former world champion Yohan Blake.

Siobhan-Marie OConnor retained her 200m medley title with a commanding win, while there were silver medals for Alice Tai in the S9 100m freestyle and the mens 4 x 200m freestyle relay team.

Godley wins in adopted home

Weightlifter Emily Godley, who moved to Australia last year, won the 75kg category, with team-mate Sarah Davies taking silver in the 69kg competition.

“I moved in July as my fiance got offered a job. Its been tough having my coach on the other side of the world,” said Godley. “It feels amazing to be on top of the podium, I cant ask for more.”

Race walker Tom Bosworth compensated for his disappointment at last years World Championships, where he was disqualified when leading, by winning the mens 20km event.
