London ranked best university city

London has been ranked as the best university city in the world, according to global rankings released today by the Times Higher Education (THE). The British capital, which boasts six top 200 universities, was ranked equal first with Boston-Cambridge, home to prestigious institutions like Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

London and Boston were followed by Paris and Hong Kong in second spot, then Berlin and Los Angeles ranked equal third. Stockholm, Shanghai, New York and Sydney were all included in the top five spots. London, however, had the greatest number of Top 500 institutions with 15, compared with 10 in Paris and eight in Boston-Cambridge.

“London is definitely retaining its status as the global power player for quality higher education,” said Seeta Bhardwa, student editor at the THE. “Its become something of a standalone destination for higher education, with students here benefitting from the resources of multiple universities. While thats not unique, it is especially appealing in a city with such a high concentration of elite institutions.”

The THEs world university rankings released last year included several UK universities, with Oxford and Cambridge taking spots number one and two. Other top 20 British universities were Imperial College London and University College London.

“The global distribution of the best university cities is so wide at the top of the tables, as countries are increasingly investing to compete for lucrative international students,” said Bhardwa. “[London is] definitely a highly attractive prospect for international students – and its really important, for UK research and business, that it remains so.”
