Tiger Roll clung on for victory at odds of 10/1 to win a thrilling Grand National at Aintree.

The smallest horse in the field looked set for a convincing victory after he jumped the last fence in the clear but had to hold off a late charge from Pleasant Company to seal an emotional win for jockey Davy Russell and trainer Gordon Elliott.

The pair faced an agonising wait for the results of a photo finish to be confirmed but were soon able to celebrate a remarkable success.

Elliott was also responsible for the third placed Bless the Wings, and amazingly it was a 1-2-3-4 clean sweep for Ireland with Gold Cup third Anibale Fly running an impressive race under top weight.

I did have a big fear, said Russell. That would have been heart breaking. I was thinking of my mum and my kids.

Ive won this race thousands of times in my head and Ive never won it like Ive done today.

Elliott added: Its unbelievable. Tiger Roll is a yard favourite..

Its great for the yard, for Gigginstown (House Stud, owners), for everyone.

Despite a gallant effort David Mullins, jockey on second-placed Pleasant Company, had to settle for second place.

We were probably a bit too keen and I quite fancied him to win, said Mullins.

I thought I was beat before then but I had to charge Davy Russell down.

I felt sick after a couple of seconds of crossing the line but thats racing.
