Five-goal Man City close in on Premier League records

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola vowed to use the final games of the season to chase a host of Premier League records after the champions celebrated with a five-goal romp against Swansea.

David Silva, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus all scored as City exhibited no signs of relenting in the first match since their title triumph was confirmed.

Victory took City to 90 points, within five of the Premier League record set by Chelsea in 2004-05, and 98 goals, again five shy of a benchmark established by the Blues in 2009-10.

“Looking for records helps to keep the players focused. The league is won, now its the records,” said Guardiola.

“You have to keep improving. We spoke to the players in the week about that. If we are improving it will be good for the new season, finishing in a good way.”

Giddy City fans flooded onto the Etihad Stadium pitch after an utterly one-sided contest in which City enjoyed 83 per cent possession and became the first top-flight team to attempt more than 1,000 passes since statisticians began collecting such data in 2003.

David Silva opened the floodgates on 12 minutes when he shot down and past Lukasz Fabianski from close range, and Sterling tapped in an easy second moments later from Fabian Delphs cross.

City dented relegation-threatened Swanseas goal difference further after half-time, first through De Bruynes 25-yard rocket – the pick of his teams goals.

Jesus hit the post with a penalty after Sterling had been fouled, but Bernardo Silva was on hand to score the rebound, and the Brazil striker made amends two minutes from time when he headed in Yaya Toures cross.
