Chelsea are plotting a £45million bid for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, according to The Sun.

The Belgium international had been a mainstay of an emerging Spurs side managed by Mauricio Pochettino but the 29-year-old has fallen out of favour in recent months.

Alderweireld has stalled on negotiations over a new deal while the form of compatriot Jan Vertonghen and emergence of summer signing Davinson Sanchez has resulted in the former Southampton centre-half losing his place in the team.

The defender was left out of last weekends FA Cup semi final defeat against Manchester United, and earlier this month Pochettino claimed Alderweireld simply wasnt deserving of a place in his side.

I dont care about the personal situation with the club. If they show me they deserve to play, they are going to play, he said.

It is not about personal feelings or emotions. It is about providing the team with the best tools to win. I cannot consider if they have a one-year contract, six months or 10 years.

My decision is always about football. It is not personal and not because of a contract problem.

United have been long-term admirers of Alderweireld but Chelsea are ready to test Tottenhams resolve with an opening £45m offer.

Earlier this week reports claimed Roman Abramovich had instructed the clubs board to press ahead with summer transfer plans, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of manager Antonio Conte.
