Arsenal are set to announce Mikel Arteta as their new manager this week after agreeing a compensation package with Manchester City.

The Gunners drew up an extensive list of candidates that could replace Arsene Wenger when the Frenchman announced his intention to leave the club in April.

The club have since whittled that list down to around four candidates and Arteta has won the race ahead of Luis Enrique, Joachim Low and Carlo Ancelotti.

Pep Guardiola said from the start that he would not stand in Artetas way if he wanted to move to the Emirates but the Gunners still had to agree a compensation package with City.

According to the Mirror, Arsenal have agreed a deal in principle with City and that has cleared the way for Arteta to be announced this week.

Artetas arrival means Arsenal will have a new manager for the first time in 22 years in what has been a summer of change at the Emirates.

One long-term figure that could be staying is Jack Wilshere, with the midfielder expected to sign a new deal once Arteta takes charge.

Arteta will be handed a modest £50m to spend in the transfer window and he will be given an advisory position alongside head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.

The Gunners are keen on Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papasthatopoulos and Freiburg ace Caglar Soyuncu.
