The World Boxing Super Series is keen to move the super-middleweight final to September, Metro.co.uk understands.

George Groves is struggling to shake off a shoulder injury in time to face Callum Smith this summer.

Smith is desperate to ensure Groves remains in the final, with reports claiming beaten semi-finalist Chris Eubank Jr was in line to replace the injured Brit.

But Metro.co.uk understands promoter Kalle Sauerland and others are working to convince WBSS owners Comosa AG to stick with Groves and avoid the backlash of installing a replacement.

Eubank Jr would not be a popular choice after the Brit was convincingly beaten by Groves in the semi-final in February.

Event promoters Comosa AG is not run by boxing experts, but are taking on the advice of the host of boxing promoters who are involved in the tournament.

That division and the disagreements over Groves fitness have held up an announcement, but the WBSS are now targeting a September date.

The O2 Arena is the venue being looked at and an announcement from the WBSS is expected soon.

Groves beat Eubank Jr on points to book his spot in the final, while Smith cruised by late-replacement Nieky Holzken in his semi-final.

Smith confirmed this week he had heard the fight could be moved to September, but had also been told several different dates by the WBSS.

Groves has insisted he will be ready to compete at the end of the summer and is slowly re-building his fitness after surgery in February.
