Kevin De Bruyne has been widely criticised following a horrific challenge on Belgium team-mate Adnan Januzaj in training.

Belgium are preparing to take on Panama in their opening match of the World Cup and need their best players available, with clashes against Tunisia and England also on the horizon.

However, in training, De Bruyne appeared intent on injuring one of teams attacking stars in the lead-up to their participation in Russia.

De Bruyne, not known for his tough-tackling, flew into a challenge on former Manchester United winger Januzaj.

The Manchester City midfielder had absolutely zero chance of making contact with the ball which makes the incident all the more bizarre.

Even stranger still, De Bruyne refused to even check whether his team-mate was okay in the aftermath.

Asked about De Bruynes challenge, former Belgium forward Marc Degryse said: Maybe De Bruyne wanted to show Januzaj that he had to react to the ball a little faster?

It was a risky tackle that he would not do with a starting player.

De Bruyne heaped praise on Raheem Sterling ahead of Belgiums Group G clash with England.

Hes a special player. This season he was playing at such a high level and hes only going to get better, he said.

Hes a winner — any criticism he has faced in the last few weeks I know he will just ignore.

At Manchester City hes so focused on success and I know he would have the same attitude with England.

He scored many goals last season, but he scored important goals too — goals that won games in the last minute – and that takes a special type of player.
