Juan Mata sends class message to David de Gea after howler against Portugal
Juan Mata has told Manchester United teammate David de Gea he is still the best goalkeeper in the world despite a costly error against Portugal in Spains World Cup opener.
The United shot-stopper allowed a long-range effort from Cristiano Ronaldo to squirm through his fingers seconds before half-time, with the Portuguese superstar bagging a hat-trick in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
De Geas error meant Spain had to come back from a goal behind for a second time on the night, but Mata was quick to support his teammate.
The 30-year-old, who did not make the 23-man squad for the World Cup, tweeted De Gea and said: You are the best, period.
It was a sentiment shared by fellow Spaniard Cesc Fabregas, who felt the mistake was uncharacteristic from a player who has been nothing less than sensational for United for several seasons.

Speaking in his role as a pundit for the BBC, Fabregas said: Yeah we dont, we dont [see it often].
For me he is definitely in the top three goalkeepers in the world.
Again its unusual, its an unusual mistake. Me and Rio [Ferdinand] played with him, we know how good he is.
He gives the defence and the team in general so much confidence. Its a shame, I feel bad for him.
