A Diego Costa-inspired Atletico Madrid came from 2-1 down to beat Real Madrid 4-2 in the Super Cup final in Tallinn, Estonia.

Real Madrid were seeking to become the first side in European history to win the competition three seasons in a row but they were 1-0 down after just 53 seconds when Diego Costa gave Diego Simeones side the lead.

The Spaniard headed past Sergio Ramos, knocked one past Raphael Varane and then fired past Keylor Navas to give his side the lead with an emphatic finish.

However, a Cristiano Ronaldo-less Real side hit back when Gareth Bale teed up Karim Benzema to equalise shortly before half-time.

Real retained the Champions League for the third season on the bounce in May with a 3-1 victory against Liverpool and Sergio Ramos gave his side the lead from 12 yards when Juanfran was adjudged to have handled in the box just after the hour mark.

That goal appeared to be the winner but Costa popped up five minutes from time to slot home Angel Correas cutback to take the game to extra time.

Both sides had numerous players involved in the World Cup and it looked as though Atletico were the fitter in the final half an hour.

Saul Niguez gave his side the lead with a stunning volley to finish off Costas cross and Koke finished the game off in the first half of extra time with a neat finish after a team move.

Atleticos win ends Reals run of two victories and after an investment-heavy summer Simeones men will be looking to progress in the Champions League after a group stage knockout last season.
