England are facing defeat in the third Test at Trent Bridge after a shocking collapse put India in complete control of the match.

Joe Roots side, who won the first two Tests impressively, lost ten wickets in the afternoon session to be bowled out for 161 in reply to Indias 329.

It was the third time in two years that England have lost all ten wickets in a single session.

Hardik Pandya caused the damage with five wickets in just 29 balls, and India reached the close having lost just two wickets with a lead of 292.

Resuming on 307-6, India would have been hoping to surpass 350 in the morning session but that did not materialise.

Debutant Rishabh Pant, who became the first Indian to score his first Test runs with a six on day one, was the first casualty as he was bowled by Stuart Broad.

Broad cleaned up Ravichandran Ashwin in his next over, before James Anderson dismissed Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah in consecutive deliveries to wrap up the innings.

Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings took advantage of some wayward bowling to make an assured start in Englands reply, taking the score to 46-0 by lunch.

Both fell shortly after the break, however, with Ishant Sharma once again removing Cook, who edged behind to wicketkeeper Pant.

Bumrah, playing his first match of the series, dismissed Jennings the same way with the very next ball to spark a disappointing and familiar collapse.

Young batsman Ollie Pope became Sharmas second victim, before Pandya claimed the prize wicket of Root as KL Rahul took a low catch in the slips.

Ben Stokes, returning to the side having missed the Lords Test, fell to Shami before Pandya had Jonny Bairstow caught behind.

All-rounder Pandya then took the next three wickets – dismissing Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid and Broad – to claim a five-wicket haul in just 29 deliveries.

Vice-captain Jos Buttler attempted to counter-attack and hit 39 off 31 balls, but England were still 168 runs adrift when he was caught in the deep off Bumrah.

Openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul ensured India maintained their dominance over England in the evening session, sharing an opening stand of 60 before Rahul was bowled by Stokes.

Dhawan also enjoyed a promising partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara before he was deceived by Rashid and stumped. Pujara and Kohli will resume on day three with India 124-2.
