Serena Williams seeding confirmed for US Open


Former world number one Serena Williams has been seeded 17th for her first US Open since giving birth.
The American was named as the 25th seed for Wimbledon but was controversially unseeded for the French Open, her first grand slam since becoming a mother.

Williams, a 23-time major singles champion, is currently ranked 26th in the WTA standings but has been given preferential treatment after spending 13 months out of the sport.
Previously a six-time champion in New York, the 36-year-old has played just three matches since finishing as the runner-up at SW19 in July.

Simon Halep is the number one seed for the womens draw, with Serenas older sister Venus Williams one place above her sibling in 16th.
