Jurgen Klopp criticised Liverpools defenders for failing to shut down Eden Hazard as the forward sent Chelsea into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in style.

Daniel Sturridge had a golden chance to open the scoring after a cagey first half but the Liverpool striker missed an open goal against his former club after rounding Simon Mignolet.

The forward immediately made amends, though, as he found the back of the net with an acrobatic overhead kick in the 58th minute to break the deadlock at Anfield.

Emerson brought the sides level with ten minutes remaining of normal time before Hazard stole the headlines with an outrageous solo effort, jinking past several Liverpool defenders before beating Mignolet with a thunderous strike.

Asked if his players could have defended Hazards run better, Klopp replied: I would say its pretty easy to say that here but hes Eden Hazard and if hes on a run, hes on a run.

Yes, of course we could have defended better. I didnt see it back so I have to see it again. I thought we lost the ball up front and then, in the box, Eden Hazard at full speed. With his turns its not easy.

Klopp compared Hazards goal to the Roberto Firminos last-gasp effort against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last week.

We scored a similar goal a few days ago and its difficult to defend at the end but its, of course, better to defend.

I dont know at the moment how but tomorrow I will know.

Hazard lifted the lid on a conversation he had on the bench with NGolo Kante before his wondergoal to seal the tie.

I spoke with NGolo on the bench and he told me he didnt want to take a penalty, so the only solution was to score! Hazard told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

I just tried to do what I can do.
