Helsingborgs IF defender Andreas Granqvist has confirmed that his agent has held talks with Manchester United over a potential move in the January transfer window.

Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign a central defender in the summer, with Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Diego Godin and Jerome Boateng all considered by the Portuguese.

However, United refused to pay the money required for Mourinhos top targets and the 55-year-old made his frustrations towards executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward known.

The Red Devils have conceded 14 goals already in the Premier League this term – the highest number in the top 15 of the table – and Mourinho is scouring the market for centre-backs once again.

Granqvist, 33, who captained Sweden at the 2018 World Cup, has emerged as a possible target and lifted the lid on Uniteds interest.

There is indeed interest. This time there is a kernel of truth [to the reports], he told Aftonbladet.

I am honoured that I am linked to such a large club, and if there is a concrete offer in January, then both the club and I will accept that, but that is currently not the case.

Asked if there had been contact with United, Granqvist responded: For sure. You can call Martin Dahlin, you have his number, and hear what he says.

On whether he had personally spoken with Mourinho, Granqvist replied: No, not to me yet personally.

The Swede admitted earlier this month that he was flattered with the interest from United.

I know that there is a lot of interest for me, he said.

United is incredibly flattering but I have not heard anything concrete yet.
