Paul Scholes slams Manchester United over motives behind Alexis Sanchez transfer

Paul Scholes has hit out at Manchester United over the motives behind the transfer of Alexis Sanchez, insisting he was not a player that was needed by the club.

The Chile international has struggled since arriving at Old Trafford from Arsenal, and has come in for some heavy criticism for his performances.

But Scholes believes he simply does not fit into the mould of a Manchester United player, who they will now be unable to shift because of his astronomical wages.

And he is convinced United only signed him to spite Manchester City.

I know he has qualities and has been a good player but I never saw him as a United player, he told ESPN.

I saw him as a bit selfish, someone who played for himself sometimes. I didnt think he was a player that we needed, especially for that type of money. How would we be able to get rid of him now when he earns those wages?

The signing felt like it happened just to stop Man City signing him.

It feels like every player who comes into the team struggles. I feel like we could sign Lionel Messi at the moment and hed struggle in this team.

Scholes also defended Manchester Uniteds recruitment staff, who have been criticised by Jose Mourinho after what he perceives to be a summer of failure in the transfer market.

I didnt like the manager praising West Hams chief scout after the defeat there and congratulating him on finding [Issa] Diop, he added.

It was a massive dig at his own scouts. If youre a scout at Man United, how can you know what type of player to look for when the manager is changing his team every week and his formation all the time? Wheres the blueprint for the player you want?

It must be an impossible job.
