Dimitar Berbatov has launched a passionate defence of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian striker has received criticism for his performances for the Red Devils this season after going 12 games without a goal.

Lukaku ended his goal drought last weekend in the draw with Southampton and also found the back of the net in Saturdays 4-1 win over Fulham.

Berbatov says he is a big fan of Lukaku and believes Manchester United fans will see the best of him when he rediscovers his confidence.

Asked about Lukakus drought earlier in the season, Berbatov said: Why do people concentrate on things like this?

Strikers are more than goals now. How is that going to help anyone? Dont you think he knows that?

Speaking on Sky Sports Goals on Sunday programme, the former Manchester United striker added: It is important [for him to score against Fulham], Im sure he felt the relief.

But I dont understand the concentration levels on him. This is like a negativity. How is that going to help his confidence? It makes him low.

I like him a lot because he is good on the ball, hes powerful. If his first touch is not as good as some other players then give him a ball he can handle.

Keep that in mind. He needs the confidence to score goals.

Berbatov also refused to criticise Jose Mourinho for Manchester Uniteds poor start to the season.

Despite beating Fulham on Saturday, the Red Devils remain only sixth in the top-flight, eight points outside of the top four and 16 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Asked whether Mourinho was the right man for his former club, Berbatov said: I cannot afford to give opinions about managers who are world-class.

He is the coach of Manchester United. Im sure hes doing his best to succeed. Hes a winner.

I hear hes very good with his players. Everyone has different tactics to fire up his players.

This is his way. I hope they can continue to play like this because it was a good result and a good performance.
