Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes Jose Mourinho would have shut up shop if his side went a goal ahead against Cardiff City.

The Portuguese was dismissed at Old Trafford on Monday, making way for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be named as caretaker boss.

The Norwegian made a dream start to his new role with an empthatic 5-1 win against former side Cardiff City on Saturday.

United went ahead in just the third minute thanks to Marcus Rashfords stunning free-kick but their attacks were relentless and Jesse Lingard [x2], Anthony Martial and Ander Herrera all got in on the act.

Uniteds full-backs were particularly attacking and it was notable how much higher the midfield were playing to get into attacking positions.

It was the first time since Sir Alex Fergusons final game as United boss that the club scored five times in a Premier League match and Rooney says Mourinho, unlike Solskjaer, would have sat on the one-goal lead.

I think the difference with Mourinho is that he gets one goal up and he likes to hold onto the result [but] now theyre trying to go up [and score more], Rooney told BT Sport.

Uniteds win leaves them eight points off the top four following Chelseas 1-0 defeat to Leicester City at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils host Huddersfield at Old Trafford on Boxing Day before entertaining Bournemouth in their final fixture of 2018.
