Former UFC champion admits he abandoned dog at airport for 5 days

A former UFC champion is facing animal cruelty charges after he admitted to abandoning his dog at the airport for five days.

Frank Shamrock said he left his mothers 7-year-old brown Labrador, Zelda, at a parking garage at Dallas Love Field Airport in Texas on March 2 after he was unable to take the dog on his flight.

Shamrock reportedly asked for someone to take the dog in a Facebook post the day of the flight. He also claimed to have called every shelter and no kill pet center within 200 miles before he left Zelda.

In an interview with TMZ, Shamrock confessed that he abandoned the dog and said: I know what I did was wrong, but there was no way out of it.

He explained that he took the dog from his mother after discovering that she could no longer care for Zelda. He said the dog was malnourished when he arrived to his mothers home in Texas.

She had three dogs. I told her we have to give her dogs away and it caused her some serious duress. It was all she had left, he said.

We gave one away through Facebook. We listed Zelda and no one wanted to take her. The next day…we had to leave and I started calling shelters, calling everybody saying “can you take a dog?”

My mom was like I dont want the dog to die,” so I put it on Facebook. I called everyone in Dallas..and it came down to the final minutes, and there was nothing I could do for the dog, so I tied it in the back of the truck, gave it food and water, and laid all the paperwork out so everyone would know exactly who this was and what was going on, He continued, adding that he called airport security to tell them exactly where Zelda was located in the parking garage.

A witness said they saw Zelda in the bed of the truck when they arrived at the airport and March 4 – and she was still there when they returned from a trip two days later, People Magazine reported.
