Social media ban in J&K to continue

JAMMU: The ban on social media across the Union Territory (UT) of J&K will continue for now, a government order (GO) has said.
Issued by J&K principal secretary (home) Shaleen Kabra on Friday evening, the GO said the administration has noticed “various terrorist activities and misuse of internet access through virtual private network (VPN) applications for coordination of terror acts, transmission of rumours and targeted messages to spread ideologies inimical to the interest of J&K”.
Given apprehensions about any bad incident taking place due to these activities, the J&K government decided to continue with the ban on social media till February 7, the order said, adding that this decision can be reviewed before that date.
The order clarified that access to mobile data services will be limited only to white-listed sites (job and bank portals, etc.) and not be extended to social media applications, allowing peer-to-peer communication.
