Valley shuts down on Afzals death anniv

SRINAGAR: A near-complete shutdown was observed across Kashmir on the seventh death anniversary of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru on Sunday, even as the J&K administration briefly suspended 2G mobile internet before it was restored in the evening. Limited mobile internet was allowed in the Valley only last month after remaining suspended since August 5 last year when Parliament ended special status of J&K and split the erstwhile state into two Union Territories.
The bandh call was given by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq-led Hurriyat Conference and the outlawed Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) for Sunday as well as Tuesday (February 11) to protest against the hangings of Afzal and JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat, respectively.
Afzal was hanged inside Delhis Tihar jail on February 9, 2013, and Bhat on February 11, 1984. They were buried inside the jail premises.
While giving the call for a complete shutdown of the Valley, Hurriyat and JKLF had also demanded the return of Afzal and Bhats mortal remains so that their burial can take place in their “homeland Kashmir”.
