Which Businesses Will Close on Day of Queen’s Funeral?

Some businesses will close on the day of the Queen’s funeral but others will remain open. This list includes restaurants, pub chains, and Sainsbury’s. Most supermarkets have scrapped plans to shut for the day. Tesco’s Express stores will be open throughout the day.
Sainsbury’s
Most supermarkets in the UK are set to shut for the day of the Queen’s funeral, with the exception of Sainsbury’s. Tesco will not open on the day of the funeral, and Sainsbury’s will only open its convenience stores until 5pm on Monday. It will also suspend its home delivery service. However, it has said that its staff will be paid for their work on Monday.
As part of the mourning process, WH Smith and Homebase will also close their stores. B&Q and Argos will also close their UK stores. Other retailers are expected to follow suit. The Royal Mail, Center Parcs and the Odeon will pause operations. Other retailers are expected to shut, or remain closed as a mark of respect.
McDonald’s
McDonald’s has confirmed it will close on Monday, 19 September, to allow people to pay their respects. The chain also said deliveries would not be available until 5pm. It advised customers to call ahead and see if they can still get a meal. Domino’s has also announced it will close on the day of the Queen’s funeral, but said it will reopen after 5pm. The closures are in honour of the late monarch, who died last Thursday at the Balmoral castle. Other stores such as John Lewis, Asda and Waitrose have also announced they will close on the day.
Kwik Fit
Kwik Fit has confirmed that all of its centres will be closed on Monday for the funeral of the Queen. The store will reopen on Tuesday with normal opening hours. Other retailers and businesses will also close for the day to show respect for the Queen.
Pub chains
Some of Britain’s biggest pub chains will stay open on the day of the Queen’s funeral, and others will close early. The state funeral will take place at 11:00 BST, and many pubs will hold a two-minute silence. In addition, many supermarkets will close. Several pub chains have confirmed that they will stay open to allow people to congregate, such as the Greene King chain.
While many retailers will close on the day of the funeral, others will stay open, especially those in central London. For example, Wetherspoons will open its London pubs and petrol stations, while Tesco will keep its Windsor outlets open until 5pm. Fullers Group is also expected to keep most of its 400 pubs open on the day of the funeral. Similarly, JW Lees has announced that 44 of its pubs will remain open, as they see their pubs as “community centres”. And Fullers Group, which owns over 400 pubs across the UK, has also backed down from its initial request.
Schools
While the date of the Queen’s funeral is a bank holiday, not all schools will close and remain open. The Department of Education has already sent an email to all schools, and more guidance will be sent once it is received. Many businesses are expected to close as a mark of respect. However, schools and further education settings will remain open as normal.
Colleges
Colleges and universities in the UK are closing on Monday 19 September in observance of the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II. However, universities are not required to close during this period of mourning, so many will stay open and continue their normal schedules. Many will hold memorial events in the Queen’s honour.
