Digital Technologies and Mental Health

Digital technologies have shaped people’s mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the future. The aim of this scoping review is to present an overview of the characteristics and efficacy of digital technologies used to improve mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The positive effects of technology on mental health include the ability to stay connected with loved ones online, a reduction in stigma, and improved outcomes for people with specific mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders and depression. For example, virtual reality (VR) can be used to treat phobias and stress by changing pain perceptions. In addition, teletherapy has been shown to be as effective as face-to-face treatment for many mental health conditions. Apps that provide coping skills can also be helpful to manage symptoms.

More negative side effects of technology on mental health include a reduction in empathy due to the absence of non-verbal cues, and increased problems with attention, self-regulation, and impulse control, especially in adolescents at risk of developing these issues. Furthermore, prolonged time spent online can result in a lack of social interactions, leading to depression and isolation.

Lastly, the use of e-health applications can be beneficial to both the individual and the healthcare system, as it allows for better monitoring and follow-up of a person?s health, and enables for a quicker response. However, people should take care to avoid technology addiction and seek help when needed. Moreover, it is important to have in-person interactions with family and friends and engage in activities that do not involve technology, such as walking or reading.
