Sajid Javid appointed home secretary

Sajid Javid has been named the new Home Secretary after Amber Rudd resigned in the wake of the Windrush scandal.

Javid is currently communities secretary. He has also served as secretary of state for business, City minister, and economic secretary.

Just days ago, Javid described Rudd as "the right person to run the Home Office".

But he became the bookies' favourite for the job after Rudd resigned.

Javid is the first BAME politician to hold the role, and in fact the first to occupy any of the four Great Offices of State (Prime Minister, Chancellor, Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary).

James Brokenshire returns to Cabinet to take up Javid's former role as housing and communities secretary.

Rudd also left the position of minister for women vacant. This has now been taken up by Penny Mordaunt, the international development secretary.

Theresa May late last night accepted Amber Rudds sudden resignation from the government after the former home secretary faced repeated calls to step down over her handling of the Windrush immigration scandal.

In her letter of resignation, Rudd said she was stepping down because she had “inadvertently misled the Home Affairs Select Committee over targets for removal of illegal immigrants during their questions on Windrush”.
