express– Police were alerted by a member of the public who made the discovery in the car park on the Black Country Route in Bilston, Birmingham just after 9am this morning.
West Midlands Police have said they are extremely concerned for the mother’s wellbeing.
Officers do not know when the baby was born or how it came to be in the car park.
Detective Inspector Jim Edmonds from the public protection unit said: “This is a truly tragic discovery, and we’ve been treating the scene and the baby with the utmost care and dignity today.
“While we don’t yet know what has happened, what we do know is that there must be a mother out there who is in real need of help − and she is my absolute priority at the moment.
“We have been checking CCTV and speaking to hospitals, but it may be that the mother or someone who knows who she is sees this appeal.
“I really want to speak to her to make sure she’s OK, and to ensure that she can get the help that she urgently needs.”
Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch, quoting log 842 of April 11.
A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We are helping to police with their inquires.”
A security guard at the supermarket told Birmingham Live: “I think it happened at around 5am this morning.
“It had already happened by the time I arrived at around 10.45am.

A witness also described the scene as being full of emergency workers this morning.
They sad: “When I arrived, there was a load of police tape and ambulances in the car park.
