Kolkata Knight Riders started the season powerfully and before their contest against Delhi Daredevils on Friday they looked solid enough to comfortably qualify for the play-offs. They dont look so robust now.
In fact, their bowling unit is increasingly untrustworthy and they should feel very nervous indeed about taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday.
We are no fans of Bangalore but if one from Quinton de Kock, the South African blitzer, Virat Kohli or AB De Villiers gets hold of them they could be in dire straits again.
Against Delhi they conceded an incredible 219. This after looking as though they were about to put on a squeeze to keep the Daredevils to about 180 when Rishabh Pant was fourth man out in the 15th with the score on 129.
How the hell did they haemorrhage 90 runs in just over five overs?
After that appalling effort, it is no wonder that Bangalore are rated as favourites to win this clash. They are best at 4-5 with William Hill. Kolkata are 6-5 with Bet365.
It is rare that we consider getting with Bangalore because they are always overrated by the bookies.
It shouldnt be forgotten that they are the most profligate bowling unit of all in the death overs. They concede an average of 13 an over, which is schoolboy stuff.
But we might break the rule of a lifetime if the toss goes their way. We can see them chasing up to 185 against this powderpuff Kolkata attack.
Kohli should be to the fore because there is no-one in that line-up which will concern him. He should be able to top score in his sleep. Take the 12-5 that Bet365 offer.
For the record De Kock is 7-2 and De Villiers 5-2 with the same firm.
We will also be having a nibble on Javon Searles at an outlandish 100-1 for top KKR runscorer with 888Sport.
He has not played yet but with KKR increasingly desperate to halt their implosion in the field the all-rounder could get a gig.
