Arsenal confirm Santi Cazorla has left the club
Santi Cazorla has been released by Arsenal after six years with the club.
The Spaniard joined the Gunners from Malaga in 2012 and became a hugely popular figure among supporters for his playing style.
Cazorla won two FA Cups with the Gunners and scored an exquisite free-kick in the 2014 cup final win against Hull City.
However, the Spaniard has been sidelined for the last 18 months with an Achilles injury and Arsenal have decided against handing the midfielder a new deal.
Santi is always one of my favourite players to watch. His natural ability with both feet, his speed of thought and movement were central to our best performances in recent years, said Ivan Gazidis. He plays with a joy and freedom which is very rare. We wish him well for the future and thank him for his important contribution to our club.
Cazorla had recently stepped up his recovery and was back in training with Arsenals first-team.
The midfielder sent a message to Arsenal supporters after the announcement to thank them for their support.
There had been speculation that he could form part of Mikel Artetas backroom staff at the Emirates but Cazorla intends to carry on playing.
His former club, Villarreal, are interested in signing him on a one-year deal.
