Reiss Nelson has hinted he could return to Arsenal as early as January after marking his England Under-21 debut with a superb goal.

Aidy Boothroyds side cantered to a 7-0 win over Andorra on Thursday night, booking their place at next summers European championships in the process.

With Unai Emery unable to guarantee Nelson a place in his first team squad this season, Nelson joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on loan and has impressed with two goals in eight appearances so far.

The 18-year-old winger was expected to play out the whole season under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann but could be back sooner than expected.

It was difficult, he told Talksport of his decision to leave north London. Arsenal is my boyhood club, theyre a big part of my life.

At the end of the day Im at an age where I want to play football and Hoffenheim is where that [chance] was. I had to get up and be strong, be independent and take my chance in Germany.

Im just here to play my football in Germany. Hopefully Ill come back in a couple of months – if its a year so be it – ready to play in Arsenals first team.

On the prospect of emulating Jadon Sancho, who has been rewarded for his performances at Borussia Dortmund this season with a place in the full England squad, Nelson added: Gareth has made it clear that the pathway is there so if youre young and youre good hell give you a chance.

Its good for me that I came through the ranks, I came from U16s all the way up to U21s.

Im trying to get in there and do my magic. A little bit showed today and Im very happy to be there.
