Jude Bellingham to make England debut on Thursday after impressing Gareth Southgate
The Borussia Dortmund starlet was called into the senior squad to make up the numbers in training on Monday – such was the impression that he made, the 17 year-old is now set for his senior bow
Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Bellingham, 17, was promoted from the under-21s after impressing in training when he was asked to make up the numbers on Monday.
Bellingham is seen as one of English football’s brightest prospects and it is understood that Gareth Southgate is planning to give him game time against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday.
That will most likely be as a substitute but it will still be a huge moment for the ex-Birmingham City trainee who would become the third youngest to play for England after Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney.
Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings said: “The call-up didn’t necessarily surprise me. I have had the opportunity to see him in training and what a fantastic talent he looks.
“I know he is from the blue side of Birmingham but he is a talent.”
Southgate plans to use an experimental line-up against Ireland with Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles – substituted early last time after Harry Maguire was sent off – looks set to start and there could be a chance for Everton ’s Michael Keane.
Bellingham, who turned 17 in June, only joined Dortmund in the summer in a £30million deal and has already made 11 appearances having turned down all the big clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
England boss Southgate has been tracking Bellingham’s progress for years because he is an unusual case for being outside a Premier League academy but has played for the Three Lions throughout the age groups.
He only received his first call-up for the England U21s in August, becoming their youngest ever player when he came on against Kosovo on 4 September.
It would also be a major boost for Southgate as central midfield is a particular area for England as they are lacking options outside of Declan Rice while Kalvin Phillips is out injured.
