Jose Mourinho targets Fred as Michael Carrick’s replacement at Manchester United
Manchester United are ready to launch a bid to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, according to reports.
The 24-year-old has impressed during his five seasons with the Ukrainian champions and has been linked with several top European clubs, including Manchester City and Arsenal.
United are understood to be in the market for a new left-back and an attacker who is capable of operating on the right flank.
But according to the Daily Record, Jose Mourinho is also looking to reinforce his options in central midfield and wants a new signing before the January deadline.
Fred is on Mourinho’s shortlist of midfield candidates and represents a viable option to sign this month.
Mourinho is searching for a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, whose contract with United expires this summer.
The 36-year-old has been sidelined this season after he required a procedure to treat an irregular heart rhythm, but he has been offered a coaching role at United if he decides to call time on his playing career.

Fred offers more of an attacking presence than Carrick but the Brazilian is considered as a well-rounded midfielder.
Earlier this week, reports claimed that City have already started working on a deal to sign Fred although it is not considered as a priority by the Premier League leaders.
Pep Guardiola is considering Fernandino’s long-term successor and views Fred as an option to replace the 32-year-old Brazilian.
