Manchester United board react to Jose Mourinhos meltdown after record defeat against Tottenham

Manchester Uniteds board are prepared to offer Jose Mourinho a vote of confidence despite a troubled start to the new season, according to the Guardian.

Tottenham subjected Mourinho to his heaviest ever defeat in a home match in all competitions as two goals from Lucas Moura and a header from Harry Kane helped Spurs continue their 100% start to the new campaign.

By contrast, United are already six points behind the early pacesetters and face a difficult trip to Burnley this weekend, hoping to turn the tide.

Mourinho attempted to to counter Tottenhams threat on Monday by employing a three-man defence, including Ander Herrera, and pushing full-backs Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia higher up the pitch.

But for Romelu Lukaku missing an open goal, United would have led at the break, before the match unraveled in the second half after Kane was left unmarked following Kieran Trippiers corner.

And, according to the Guardian, United chiefs saw enough in the first half performance to suggest Mourinho is worth persisting with.
