RACING returns to normality at Happy Valley in Hong Kong this afternoon. Last Wednesdays thunderstorms and incessant rain sent racegoers scuttling inside the grandstand and we even saw a rare ground change, with yielding added to the description.
Thankfully the sun is back out in force again and, with temperatures hitting the low 30s and humidity hovering in the 90s, its going to be warm work for horses, jockeys and the punters cheering them home.
The highlight of the eight-race card has to be the £120,000 Class3 handicap over 1m1f at 3.15pm.
This is another fiendishly difficult puzzle to solve, with half of the dozen runners having winning chances on their best form.
With Joao Moreira and Zac Purton riding Quick Return and last-timeout- winner Super Chic respectively, you can be sure they will command a big following in the betting ring.
Add the ingredients of track specialist Victory Boys, consistent and popular Willie Way, and the well handicapped McQueen, and it all adds up to a nightmare stew for form-book students.
However, it could pay to take a chance with progressive four-year-old FAITHFUL TRINITY, who was a winner of the Group Two Grand Criterium over an extended seven furlongs at San Siro, Italy, as a two-year-old.
Like the majority of European exports, it has taken him time to acclimatise to conditions in Hong Kong, but there have been encouraging signs in his last couple of races that he is about to peak.
He is now racing off a 23lb lower mark than when arriving in town last season, and a recent promising trial at Happy Valley, as a prep for this contest, suggests he could be a value-for-money play.
Chinese whizz-kid and 10lb claimer Victor Wong makes his debut at the Valley this afternoon, after starting his riding career in HK back in March.
The 24-year-old apprentice has already been making the headlines by riding eight winners from just 57 rides.
Having already ridden over 160 winners in three seasons back in South Australia, his 10lb claim is a massive bonus to connections who book him to ride.
He has a handful of rides here, and speedy last-start winner SUPER EIGHTEEN looks capable of defying a penalty in the 2.15pm over six furlongs.
