Anthony Martial and Alexandre Lacazette miss out on France World Cup squad

Didier Deschamps has named his squad for this summers World Cup and has made a number of big calls, omitting both Manchester United star Anthony Martial and Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The Red Devils winger has struggled for game time recently under Jose Mourinho and missed the final Premier League match of the season with a knee injury, though has travelled to London for the FA Cup final.

Arsenal frontman Lacazette has been in excellent form for the Gunners since returning from injury, though Deschamps has opted to pick his former teammate Olivier Giroud instead.

France's 23-man World Cup squad

Goalkeepers: Areola, Lloris, Mandanda
Defenders: Hernandez, Kimpembe, Mendy, Pavard, Rami, Sidibe, Umtiti, Varane
Midfielders: Kante, Matuidi, Nzonzi, Pogba, Tolisso
Forwards: Dembele, Fekir, Giroud, Griezmann, Lemar, Mbappe, Thauvin

With Laurent Koscielny injured, Clasico rivals Raphael Varane and Samuel Umtiti will form the central defensive partnership for France with skipper Hugo Lloris in goal.

Despite missing much of the season, Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy has snuck into the side, though Aymeric Laporte is not even on the stand-by list, while Les Blues are overloaded with options in attack and midfield.

Premier League stars Paul Pogba and NGolo Kante unsurprisingly make the squad, while the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe complete the attack.

There is no place in the side for Dimitri Payet, who exited the Europa League final in tears on Wednesday night due to a hamstring injury, though Nabil Fekir makes the squad.

Although not in the 23-man squad, both Martial and Lacazette do make Deschamps stand-by list.

Other players who are waiting in the wings are: Wissam Ben Yedder, Kingsley Coman, Benoit Costil, Mathieu Debuchy, Lucas Digne, Adrien Rabiot, Mamadou Sakho, Moussa Sissoko and Kurt Zouma.
