ASU picked for Sun Bowl matchup vs. North Carolina State

Arizona State will make its sixth appearance in the Hyundai Sun Bowl, taking on North Carolina State on Friday, Dec. 29, at 1 p.m. (MT) at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

North Carolina State finished 8-4 on the season and 6-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack will be playing in a bowl for the fourth consecutive season under head coach Dave Doeren.

ASU is 7-5 (6-3 in the Pac-12) and will be making a fifth and final bowl appearance in six seasons under coach Todd Graham, who was fired at the end of the regular season.

North Carolina State is led by defensive end Bradley Chubb, the ACC defensive player of the year who had 25 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, and running back Nyheim Hines, who rushed for 1,040 yards.

ASU quarterback Manny Wilkins has thrown for 2,918 yards and 17 TDs with five interceptions; senior running back Demario Richard has 977 rushing yards; and sophomore wideout N’Keal Harry has 73 catches for exactly 1,000 yards.

The Sun Devils have played NC State only twice in their history — a 35-14 loss in 1974, when the head coaches were Frank Kush and Lou Holtz, and a 25-22 win in 1960.

ASU last played in the Sun Bowl in 2014, defeating Duke 36-31.

“This is a great opportunity for us to compete against a top-notch program and close out the 2017 season right,” Graham said. “We look forward to representing our university in El Paso with character, class and dignity.”
