WATCH – Dramatic Body Cam Video: Milwaukee Police Officers Rescue Teens from Burning Car

Two Milwaukee police officers are now local heroes after rescuing two unconscious teens from a burning car Tuesday night.

“Officers Nicholas Schlei and Nicholas Reid, both 23, were on patrol… when a Pontiac Grand Am crashed into a utility pole and overturned,” the Associated Press reports. “Flames erupted from the car’s engine compartment.”

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a third teen escaped by kicking out a window. The driver and another boy, however, remained trapped inside, unconscious.

“The two officers managed to pull the 16-year-old boys out in less than a minute,” the AP continues.

In a body camera video which captured the rescue, an officer can be heard shouting “Back up! Car’s on fire! Back up!” to bystanders.

Schlei and Reid will be nominated for a Milwaukee Police Department Merit Award, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Jesse Garza.

“I think that officers just like us, and at every Milwaukee police district station, even across the country, they would do the same thing,” Reid said.

“Because that’s why we joined and that’s why we’re cops.”
