Manchester United set for mid-season trip to Dubai after Coventry City’s victory against Stoke City
Manchester United will visit Dubai later this month for an extended break following Coventry City’s win against Stoke City in the FA Cup.
Jose Mourinho revealed after Friday’s win against Derby that his players wanted to avoid a replay so that they could jet out to the United Arab Emirates for some warm weather training.
However, their trip was dependent on Stoke’s result against Coventry as a draw would have meant United would have to rearrange their clash against the Potters in the Premier League – therefore denying them the opportunity to take the trip.
The Sky Blues opened the scoring against Mark Hughes’ men but Charlie Adam’s penalty levelled the game. However, a late winner from Jack Grimmer has granted the United squad their wish.
United last visited Dubai during mid-season during David Moyes’ ill-fated ten months at the club and Sir Alex Ferguson took his squad to Qatar twice during the latter years of his tenure.
Late goals from Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku ensured United booked their place in the next round of the FA Cup and the manner of the team’s celebration after Lukaku’s goal was noted by supporters.
Mourinho was asked about the celebrations after the match and he revealed it was because his squad are desperate for the trip to Dubai.
‘Do you want the truth?’ said Mourinho.
‘If we have a replay we don’t go to Dubai and everybody wants to go, everybody wants to go.
‘Did you see the players celebrating the second goal? Everyone wants to have a good week of good training, good facilities in the sun, but now we still depend on Stoke result. Because if Stoke gets a draw we don’t go to Dubai
‘When do we go? We go Monday but if they get a draw we don’t go.’
