Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku turned on his team-mates for ‘hiding’ during their shock Champions League exit to Sevilla.

The Red Devils were favourites to progress to the last-eight but Ben Yedder’s double silenced the Old Trafford crowd and Lukaku’s goal came too late for the side to mount a comeback.

Jose Mourinho praised his side’s character after the game and said it was not a ‘bad performance’ but serious question marks must be raised after United had just four shots on goal over the two legs.

Lukaku was surviving on scraps in each game and he hit out at his team-mates after the match for ‘hiding’ during the 2-1 defeat.

‘Somethings were wrong with some players, some players were hiding,’ Lukaku told BT Sport.

‘The deception was very big. You know we started the game well but we let them get a bit of control in the game. We had a few half chances but we didn’t score.

‘They score the first goal and from that moment on we tried to change the game but they score the second goal which is a big blow.

‘At the end we kept pushing but it’s not enough and we should have done much better with the quality we have in the team but we didn’t deserve it because we weren’t good enough.’

“Some players were hiding.” ?

“We expected better from ourselves, we didn’t show the quality we have.” ?

United mustered just four shots on target over the two legs despite fielding the likes of Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.

Lukaku had one other golden chance barring his goal and he said the service was not good enough.

‘We should have scored earlier in first half with the half chances we created,’ continued Lukaku.

‘The last pass today was not good enough. We got in the right positions but the last pass was not good enough and that’s what killed us today.

‘In the dressing room because some people are disappointed with the result. We expected better from ourselves.

We know we have a lot of quality but today we didn’t show it. We have to bounce back. We have one trophy to go and chase that’s the Fa Cup but we wanted to go far in the Champions League because that’s what a club like Manchester United has to do so we’re disappointed.’
