Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is adamant that his side will not swap their usual front-foot tactics in favour of sitting back and protecting their lead against Manchester City in Tuesdays Champions League quarter-final second leg.
The Reds dismantled runaway Premier League leaders City during an electric first half as they chalked up a commanding 3-0 first-leg lead. Should Liverpool score at the Etihad Stadium, City will need to amass at least five goals to progress.
“The perfect scenario? If we score five it will be difficult for Manchester,” said Klopp. “I know it is not really likely. It is about being stable, being brave, being lively, being high energetic, trying to cause them problems.”
Key to Liverpools ability to destabilise City is the fitness of 38-goal forward Mohamed Salah, who suffered a groin injury in the first leg and missed Saturdays Merseyside derby against Everton.
Klopp was non-committal over Salahs potential involvement in the clash, although the Egyptian worked with fitness coaches over the weekend and trained yesterday at Liverpools Melwood base.
“He is not sure 100 per cent. He was yesterday with the athletic coach, training,” added Klopp. “At 5pm we train at Melwood and we will see if he can be part of the training. Its rather yes than no.
“Then we have to wait for the reaction, until tomorrow, and then we will make a decision.”
Klopp also shrugged off suggestions that City were vulnerable following back-to-back defeats, insisting that such a dip in form granted their opponents the status of a wounded animal of which to be wary.
“We have to be at our best again,” he said. “If it was how everyone expected then we would already be halfway out. We would have lost the first game and come here to keep our pride.
“In football you always have the chance to respond and strike back. City have that chance.”
