These are Britain’s most complained about banks

HSBC and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) were the two national high street banks with the most complaints in the second half of last year, according to data released today by the City watchdog.

BNP Paribas-owned Creation Financial Services scored the highest number of complaints per 1,000 accounts for banking and credit cards, at 16.15, data from the Financial Conduct Authority reveal.

Hargreaves Lansdown Asset Management came in at number two in the banking and credit cards category, followed by Advantage Finance, owned by Midlands-based lender S&U.

HSBC was the worst-performing of the high street banks with national reach, with 6.88 complaints per 1,000 – although Bank of Ireland, which has branches in Northern Ireland, saw a higher rate.

It was a bad quarter for RBS: private bank Coutts – famed as the Queen's bank – was the fifth-worst performer of any lender, with more than 10 complaints per 1,000 accounts. The parent company fared little better, with RBS coming in as eighth worst, at a ratio of 6.69.

Nottingham Building Society was the best performer of any brand with a significant branch presence, recording only 0.5 claims for every 1,000 accounts.
