Andrew Tyrie to be probed by BEIS committee before CMA shoo-in
The incoming head of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) Andrew Tyrie is to be probed by the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) committee at a pre-appointment hearing before taking up his new post.
The former Chichester MP and chair of the Treasury committee will take part in a session with the BEIS committee tomorrow, which will centre on his views on markets and intervention and the experience he gained in his previous roles.
The CMA is currently investigating the proposed takeover of Sky by 21st Century Fox based on concerns around media plurality and broadcasting standards, as well as the more recent Trinity Mirror and Express merger.
It is also likely he will be asked about ensuring consumer protection and how to hold the organisation accountable.
Tyrie was provisionally announced as the new head of the competition watchdog earlier this month, having been urged by senior figures in the financial services sector to take up the top job.
The current chairman, John Griffith-Jones, confirmed last June that he would be vacating the role after serving a five-year term.
Griffith-Jones attracted criticism over the FCA's handling of a number of probes, and in particular, a bungled investigation into the insurance industry which wiped billions off the market value of leading insurers.
