Sam Torrance: Alexander Levy has kick-started Ryder Cup bid

With the Ryder Cup being held in France for the first time, French players have even greater incentive to make the European team this year, and Alexander Levy kick-started his challenge on Sunday.

Levy won the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco and he won it well. He was the outstanding player all week and made the shot of the final round at the par-three 17th, where he set himself up for a birdie – and a two-stroke lead – with a brilliant tee shot onto a green which had a tricky pin placement.

He wouldnt be the first Frenchman to represent Europe, but it would still be huge for him to make Thomas Bjorns team for the contest with the United States in September. It may not be held in France again in his career, so this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Levy is in with a chance. He is a swashbuckling type who plays with real charisma and style. He is also the highest ranked of the current crop of French players, so the best chance of ensuring a home representative at Le Golf National in Paris.

His victory at the weekend was his fifth on the European Tour and, at 27 years old, thats not too shabby. He has been in good form this year, with two more top-five finishes. Now that he is back in the world top 50, the key to his Ryder Cup hopes will be staying there, as it gives him entry to the biggest events, which carry the most points.

In reality there probably arent that many places still up for grabs in the European team, but then Levy only needs one. Its up to him now to step up and claim it.

Join me on a golfing tour with a difference

In June 2018 join me on an extremely special golfing experience through the Highlands, playing some of Scotlands finest courses, travelling in style aboard the fully inclusive Belmond Royal Scotsman luxury train.

This is my second year hosting the Scottish Golf Tour and I loved it last time. Playing Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart and Kingsbairns is a golfing treat – you just have to put up with me on the train! The journey runs from Monday 25 to Friday 28 June departing Edinburgh.
