Renowned accessories designer Kate Spade has reportedly died age 55.

US press reported that she was found in her Park Avenue apartment by her housekeeper today, and although the exact cause of death is not known, TMZ have stated that she was found hanging.

According to officials, she had left a note, but they refused to comment on what it said. She was pronounced dead at 10.26 am.

Police said that her husband, Andy Spade, was at the scene but it has not been made clear where her daughter was at the time.

Along with her husband, Kate founded her eponymous brand in 1993.

Her designs were bright and quirky, with animals and flowers at the forefront.

She sold the company in 2007, and Kate went on to launch Frances Valentine; another accessories brand, this time named after her daughter.

Last year, Coach bought over Kate Spade Company for $2.4 billion.

Her death has shocked the world, with many people commenting on the fact she enjoyed so much success but was crippled with mental illness.

Kate Spade is a prime example of how fame and money don't cure a mental illness. Chasing after material goods and ego boosts wont cure your depression.

Theres absolutely no shame in admitting that you need help. Your life is important and people are willing to help

My grandmother gave me my first Kate Spade bag when I was in college. I still have it. Holding Kates family, friends and loved ones in my heart.

Shocked to hear of Kate Spades passing. She was a pioneer for womens fashion, and to the outside world, a success in every way. But mental illness does not discriminate. No matter who you are. If you ever feel alone, know there is ALWAYS help. Love you.

Kate Spade was so talented, I'm really shocked. Her new brand 'Frances Valentine' is one of my favorites. So much talent, you'd think she had it all. But nothing is more powerful than the state of your mental health. I'm so sorry Kate didn't feel she could carry on. So sad.

Kates former publicist Rob Shuter told Metro.co.uk, She was kind. She was decent and above all she taught everyone around her to be nice. We are heartbroken.
