How the Manchester United board reacted to Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinhos training-ground spat

There is growing concern in the Manchester United boardroom after Jose Mourinhos very public spat with Paul Pogba in training on Wednesday, according to reports.

Player and manager appeared to argue at Carrington despite the rare presence of television cameras at the open training session, with Mourinho objecting to a video Pogba uploaded to Instagram after Tuesdays Carabao Cup defeat to Derby County.

United exited the tournament on penalties while Pogba laughed and joked in the stands on Instagram, though it was filmed in the first half when United were winning and the delay in upload has been attributed to Old Traffords poor 4G coverage on match days.

According to The Times, Mourinho still has the backing of United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, even after their latest falling out, but some board members are growing restless.

There is a feeling in the upper echelons of Old Trafford that it is unedifying for footage of their disagreement to have been broadcast around the world, and does not paint the club in a particularly good light.

Over seven million people have watched the clip of Mourinho and Pogbas frosty exchange, and there are even suspicions that the Portuguese coach planned the confrontation.

Members of Uniteds hierarchy are concerned with the situation and have urged Woodward to organise a meeting between Pogba and Mourinho so they can resolve their problems – this time behind closed doors rather than in front of the cameras.

Woodward backed Mourinho over his decision to strip Pogba of his second captain status and is still supportive of his approach with the £89m man after Wednesdays drama.

However, he will not go as far as to sell Pogba – which is believed to be Mourinhos wish – and would only sack the United boss if the clubs form drops off in a big way, meaning their very public falling out could go on a while longer.
