Juventus are sweating over the fitness and availability of Emre Can ahead of Tuesdays clash with Manchester United after the summer signing was diagnosed with a thyroid problem that could require surgery.

The Germany international arrived at the Serie A champions on a free transfer from Liverpool, having refused to sign a new contract with the Merseysiders.

He was left on the bench in Saturdays 1-1 draw against Genoa as Max Allegri rotated his side, though – along with the Likes of Giorgio Chiellini – was expected to come back into the team for the visit to Old Trafford.

However, Juventus confirmed on Sunday that Can has sustained an injury and could now miss the Champions League clash with United.

A brief statement read: Emre Can will undergo clinical tests and investigations for a thyroid nodule that could also require surgical treatment.

If surgery is required, Can could also miss Juves home match against United at the start of November, as well as league matches against Empoli and Cagliari.

The match against Genoa at the weekend was the first game Can has missed since moving to Turin, having racked up 10 appearances for his new club.

How Juventus could line up against Man Utd…

Allegri was expected to bring Can into the starting XI to provide more stability at Old Trafford.

Instead, Rodrigo Bentancur could be given the nod in central midfield – having started against Genoa – with Blaise Matuidi and Miralem Pjanic alongside him.
