F**k the Pope: Rangers legend slammed for sectarian slur at football dinner

Ian Durrant has come under fire after footage emerged of him saying f*** the Pope at a dinner for Rangers legends.

The 51-year-old joined the likes of Barry Ferguson and Lee McCulloch at the Bothwell Bridge Hotel, Lanarkshire, earlier this month to recount their days with the Scottish giants.

But Durrant – who played 20 times for Scotland – has come under serious fire after making the bigoted remark during his speech.

David Scott, a spokesman for Scottish anti-sectarian charity Nil By Mouth, told the Daily Record: This is crass behaviour and reflects extremely poorly on the person involved and in 2018 there is no excuse for it.

That this is someone who is currently in a management position at an SPFL football club also reminds us that sectarianism still blights the game here.

Durrant – who spent 13 years playing for Rangers, while also spent time working for the SPL outfit in a coaching capacity – was working as assistant manager of Scottish League One side Dumbarton before assuming the role as manager after the sacking of Steve Aitken.

However, he has since left the club after the appointment of Jim Duffy.
