Manchester United are keen to tie Tahith Chong down to a new long-term deal at the club after the teenager impressed Jose Mourinho in training, Metro.co.uk understands.

United beat the likes of Barcelona and Juventus to Chong in 2016 when the Curacao-born winger decided to leave Feyenoord for Old Trafford.

Chong suffered a devastating knee injury at the end of his first season at the club but United have been assured by his recovery and he was taken on last summers pre-season tour of the United States in recognition of his performances for the U18s.

The 18-year-old is now a regular for the clubs U23s but has been training with Uniteds first team in recent weeks and has impressed Mourinho with his maturity.

The pathway into Uniteds first team is blocked by the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial but the club want Chong to feel valued and are willing to give him a new deal with a significant payrise, Metro.co.uk understands.

The teenager earns around £2,000-a-week at Old Trafford but can expect somewhere between £15,000 to £20,000-a-week on a new deal.

United tied Angel Gomes down to a new deal earlier this year and Chong is considered alongside the midfielder to be the pick of Uniteds academy at this moment in time.

Chong knows there wouldnt be a shortage of suitors should he wish to leave the club but hes happy to stay and negotations are expected to be straightforward.
