Manchester United star Chris Smalling is in talks over a new bumper £120,000-a-week deal to stay at Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, though United have the option of extending his deal by 12 months.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign a new centre-back but values Smalling and believes he deserves a significant upgrade on his £80,000-a-week deal.

United are willing to hand Smalling a three-year extension, effectively tying him to the club until 2022 according to the Daily Mail.

The news is unlikely to please United fans, who are yet to be convinced by Smalling despite his eight years at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has handed a two-man shortlist to Ed Woodward ahead of the January transfer window.

The 55-year-old is keen on Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic and Joachim Andersen from Sampdoria.

Smalling is one of eight players out of contract at the end of the season but United are expected to extend the deals of David De Gea, Anthony Martial, Antonio Valencia, Andreas Pereira and Matteo Darmian by 12 months.

United are working on new deals for Ashley Young, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

Mata, though, wants to assess his options in January before singing a new deal.
