Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho very happy to see Chris Smalling sign long-term contract
Jose Mourinho expressed his happiness at the news Chris Smalling had signed a new long-term deal at Manchester United.
Smalling has been in talks with United for several months, with the defender seeking a big wage bump after eight years at the club.
Mourinho rates Smalling as one of his most senior players, as the centre-back extended his deal until 2022.
United are on the hunt for a new centre-back in January, but Mourinho revealed he was very happy Smalling was on board for the long-term.
I am very happy Chris has signed a new contract, Mourinho said. Chris has been with the club for a number of years and is now one of the senior players within our squad.
Smalling may have to compete with the likes of Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly next year, with United reportedly ready to spend upwards of £75million on the defender.
United signed Smalling from Fulham in 2010 and the 29-year-old has racked up over 300 appearances for the Red Devils.
