Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Mason Greenwood to be prepared to make his senior debut in Manchester Uniteds FA Cup clash with Reading, according to reports.

The 17-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest young talents at United following his prolific record for the academy.

In 19 matches across Uniteds youth sides and reserve team this season, Greenwood has scored 22 goals.

And that record was bolstered earlier this week with a sublime hat-trick in Uniteds win over Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup.

First-team coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna both watched the game from the stands, while Solskjaer also revealed that he saw the match and Uniteds new interim manager would have been impressed with Greenwoods display.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Solskjaer has already spoken with Greenwood and has told the striker to be prepared to make an appearance in the third round of the FA Cup as United host Reading at Old Trafford on January 5.

Greenwood has been training with Uniteds first team on occasions this season, while the striker was also named on the bench for Uniteds defeat to Valencia in the Champions League on December 12.

Speaking earlier this week, Solskjaer stressed that he is keen to give first-team opportunities to Uniteds best academy talent.

Thats the identity, our identity. I was in the reserves, so Ive been on that side of it, said Solskjaer.

The link between the academy and the first team, I know first-hand how important it is, thats in our tradition.

It doesnt just go back to to the Class of 92, it goes back even further than Sir Alex Ferguson, back to Sir Matt Busby.

He had a saying Ill never forget: If youre good enough, youre old enough. I really hope that I can be a part of that tradition.

There are some great youngsters coming through, I have to say.
