Steven Gerrard has revealed what he told his Rangers players after the Old Firm victory over Celtic.

Ryan Jacks first-half goal was enough to separate the sides at Ibrox as Rangers moved level with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The 1-0 victory saw Gerrard inflict Brendan Rodgers first defeat in 13 Old Firm matches. It was also Rangers first win over Celtic since April 2016.

Asked what he told his players after the victory, Gerrard said: I told them to remember the level. Remember the standard.

Any team that comes up here, if we play to that level, they will be in for a tough game. Thats how it needs to be.

Liverpool legend Gerrard added: This moment is all about the supporters. Theyve been through a lot. Theyve been punished in these fixtures recently so this is all about them.

The players were outstanding across the pitch. We were better to a man. We could have made it more comfortable but it was a good result. We were superb.

Theres still a lot of work to do. Celtic are a good team with a good manager. We can still improve and grow and we will.

Gerrard also said the victory would give his team confidence and belief that they can beat defending champions Celtic to the title.

We should get confidence and belief from the win, he said. But we also respect Celtic. Its a tough league, it will be a tough challenge.

Rodgers, meanwhile, admitted his Celtic team were outplayed by their local rivals and deserved to leave Ibrox with nothing.

I thought the best team won, he said. We made a lot of unforced mistakes and didnt create enough. Theres no excuses from us.
